Unlocking Opportunity: Women’s Digital Savings Success
Dedza, Malawi: a farming village 75 kilometers outside Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.
Dedza, Malawi: a sunny rural town, mid-winter, with people walking down red dirt paths traveling between their farms and the local markets.
Dedza, Malawi: The hometown of the Tilimbe savings group, which translates to “strength” in English.
On a bright August morning, over thirty women gathered under the Dedza sun, dressed in vibrant, matching chitenje cloths. As they assembled for their weekly savings group meeting, their voices rose in joyful song, welcoming visitors with dance. These women, many of whom independently support their families, embody both resilience and optimism through their commitment to one of Malawi’s first digital Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA).
Tilimbe built their all-women savings group to transform how each member manages their finances, supports their households, grows their businesses, and strengthens their crop resilience. And while most members own maize (corn) plots, they now look toward even larger goals with the support of their VSLA. Together, they have funded purchases that seemed out of reach - chickens, goats, extra land, even cows - all made possible by their group’s unity and shared vision.
The group has championed their dream of owning a community minibus service to ease transportation from local villages to town markets. This vision highlights the deeply impactful power of collective effort to improve daily life in their villages.
Every week, the women log their savings, loans, and repayments on a group smartphone, marking the first time having digital support for many. In an atmosphere of respect and trust, they contribute their weekly shares, which are secured in a locked multi-key box by the treasurer for safekeeping. Each transaction is digitally tracked, ensuring full transparency and eliminating the need for lengthy calculations. For accuracy, two members count all funds in tandem, reinforcing the group’s values of accountability and honesty.
Through this digital VSLA, the women gain more than savings; they experience a streamlined, inclusive financial tool that provides them with efficient and error-free accounting. The system calculates total investments, tracks loans, and automatically shows repayment amounts and interest owed, saving valuable time and reducing human error. The savings meetings prior to having digital support took around two hours, but with the phone, take only 45 minutes. Compared to traditional savings methods, these digital processes allow the women to focus more on decision-making and future planning.
As they look ahead, this digital VSLA empowers them with micro-loans to expand their farms and launch side businesses. Their collective action strengthens the community and encourages each woman to take an active role in family and community life. With pooled resources, they’ve also created a support system to weather hardships, whether from weather impacts on their crops or unexpected family needs.
Together, they redefine resilience, building a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their village.
