At Opportunity International Agriculture Finance, we believe in the power of innovation and partnership to lift farmers out of poverty and build resilient agricultural communities. In Ghana, our major initiatives are already creating tangible, life-changing impacts for smallholder farmers, young entrepreneurs, and rural communities.

Our Key Initiatives in Ghana

1. Expanding Access through the Farmer Support Agent (FSA) Model

Launched in 2023 in partnership with Opportunity International Savings and Loans (OISL), the FSA model is revolutionizing how farmers in Ghana access financial services and agricultural support.

  • We built a network of 84 trained Farmer Support Agents in the Ashanti and Western regions.
  • These agents now serve over 9,379 smallholder farmers and traders, offering crucial links to markets, financing, and training.
  • Our agents include 55 men and 29 women, working tirelessly to support rural communities.
  • By January 2025, we aim to expand even further, continuing to build economic resilience for farmers who previously had little or no access to formal services.

The Value for Ghanaian Farmers:
Through local FSAs, farmers gain trusted, community-based advisors who help them grow their businesses, manage risk, and increase productivity.

2. Building Financial Resilience with FIRST+II

Started in September 2024, the Financial Institutions Resilience Strengthening Scale Up (FIRST+II) project empowers young farmers and micro-entrepreneurs across eight key regions in Ghana.

  • With funding from the Mastercard Foundation and in partnership with Capital Plus Exchange (CapPlus), Opportunity International delivers tailored Business Development Services (BDS).
  • We have already onboarded 394 FSAs and reached 5,536 smallholder farmers, with 83.67% under the age of 35.
  • The project spans the Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta, Western, Western North, Central, Ashanti, and Bono regions, directly supporting the next generation of Ghanaian agricultural leaders.

The Value for Ghanaian Farmers:
By building financial literacy, expanding access to credit, and strengthening business skills, we help young farmers thrive - ensuring the future of agriculture in Ghana is bright and sustainable.

3. Driving Innovation with FarmerAI: The "Krachie" Chatbot Pilot

In a bold move to harness technology for smallholder farmers, Opportunity International has partnered with GIRSAL and the Development Bank Ghana (DBG) to launch the FarmerAI chatbot pilot, known as Farm "Krachie."

  • We trained 100 extension agents, community-based agents, and lead farmers to introduce digital advisory services to their communities.
  • The pilot currently supports approximately 3,300 rice farmers in the Volta region and will soon expand to serve additional crop value chains across the country.

The Value for Ghanaian Farmers:
Farmers now receive real-time, personalized agricultural advice via chatbot technology - boosting crop yields, reducing risks, and embracing innovation in even the most remote areas.
