Building Futures in Bubago: The Story of Batana
In the heart of Uganda, Batana has become a symbol of what leadership, learning, and vision can achieve.
Before stepping into his role as a Farmer Support Agent (FSA), Batana was already known for his dedication. A hardworking farmer and the Parish Development Model (PDM) Sacco secretary, he worked tirelessly to strengthen his community. His integrity and drive caught the attention of the parish chief, who nominated him to join Opportunity International’s FSA program in 2023: a moment that he used to help change his village’s future.
A Journey of Learning and Leadership
Through Opportunity International’s curriculum, Batana gained new skills in group dynamics, financial literacy, family business development, and digital financial services, helping him to build lasting change within the community itself.
Today, Batana supports more than 200 farmers across eight active savings and agricultural groups. He mentors farmers on managing their finances, building collective savings, and accessing banking services, helping them move from subsistence to stability.

Planting Seeds of Education
But Batana's vision didn’t stop at farming. With the confidence and financial knowledge gained through the FSA program, he turned his long-held dream into reality: building a school for the children of his community.
In January 2023, he founded Salvation Junior School, a nursery school that opened its doors with 100 pupils in three classrooms. What began as a small effort to serve his neighborhood has blossomed into a thriving center of learning:
· 2024: 200 pupils enrolled
· 2025: 250 pupils projected
· Staff: 6 teachers, 1 security guard, and 1 cook
The school now stands as a source of pride for the community. It is a place where children learn, play, and dream of bright futures. Parents who once doubted the possibility of accessible education now see their children taking confident steps toward something bigger.
Growing Beyond Boundaries
Looking ahead, Batana envisions a future of growth and possibility. His plans for the school include:
· Expanding the school compound
· Installing quality playground swings
· Constructing permanent classrooms
· Purchasing a school van to make education more accessible
